Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western Kenya LGBTI network, -NYARWEK- was formed in the year 2009 to advocate for the rights of the LGBTI in Nyanza, Rift Valley and western Kenya. The organization is with a view to build capacities of its members, integrate views and advocate for LGBTI rights and inclusion agenda. Its other mandates are to coordinate and network member groups and organisations to enable movement building, improve capacities of members, individual LGBTI and Queer persons in the region by conducting and enhancing lobbying and advocacy activities for the different sectorial stakeholders through situation relevant strategies.

The network has a security and protection programme that utilizes a cluster response to manage security issues. The programme is designed to receive, validate and respond to security issues in a rapid manner and the promotion of awareness creation through a local advocacy set up as well.

Since 2012, National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) have been consistently offering legal aid to LGBTIQ persons in Kenya. NGLHRC has horned her skills and niche as the -to go to -organization for legal aid including security response.

The organization has used the legal aid portal to gather evidence on the effects of discriminative laws (such as sodomy laws in Kenya) and strategically shared this evidence with partners such as the UN-OHRC to inform Kenya’s review at the UPR in January 2015.

Further, for the last two years NGLHRC has been running a security response mechanism where we respond to safety concern of our constituency, including but not limited to supporting internal relocation and fact finding/urgent action missions across the country.
